Draft pages from Paradise Drive, the Artist’s Book, a combination of selected sonnets from Rebecca Foust’s recent book, Paradise Drive and my watercolor responses. Paradise Drive chronicles the life of Pilgrim whose journey begins in rustbelt Pennsylvania and ends in the glittering suburb of Marin County, California. The book is composed entirely of sonnets, a form that traditionally occupies fourteen lines. My paintings are created from fourteen watercolor strokes that through hue, value, intensity and placement reflect the subject, structure, tone and storyline of the poems.
I use the material qualities of the medium to visually comment on the poems. To introduce Pilgrim, a woman adrift in a world of privilege, I created a painting of isolated brush strokes. As her pilgrimage continues, the brushstrokes begin to overlap, creating new and more interesting images from the overlay of transparent paint. My goal is to make paintings that both stand on their own and create book pages that resonate in a meaningful way.
